gum roller coaster project

Required Materials:

- Clean Hands- 3x5 Index Card or Equivalent- Pack of Favorite Gum

Start by chewing a few pieces of gum for about 5 min. or until firm.Wet your fingers before touching the gum to reduce stickiness. Make a small ball or square to signify your starting and ending point.

Take out a small chuck of gum and make it into a spaghetti string by rolling it with your fingers. For this your fingers need to be sufficiently wet.Once in a spaghetti string begin to make beginning of "track"

To be able to make the gum rise from the paper we will need to use the paper wrapper that the gum came in. Fold along the already made creases and rip where the creases are to get two wide pieces and one thin as seen in the picture to the right.

We will take the wide strip and fold it in half the long way and then repeat that action again to get a thin strip of paper. Then fold in half the thin way to make a "V" shape. Then fold out small "feet" from each edge. These steps are seen in the picture to the right.

You will need to make various sizes of these "A's". To do this you would shorten the thin folded strip on one side before folding in half to get the "V" shape. Your needs will vary, but the one in this example used 15 of the various sizes. You can make these as the need arises.

Now take a very small amount of gum and apply it to the feet of the "A" and place them in the desired sequence. I places mine in a row growing in size. This would represent the initial climb of the roller coaster.

For the laying of the track on the rise and fall you need to make sure you have a large enough piece to cover the area, and not too long that it keeps getting tangled. Also it's good to keep the string to a essential thinness only. When placing the gum on the "A's" you shouldn't need more then a slight pressure to make it stick. Also you won't need to make the gum tight between the "A's" just guide it into place.

You might now look at your remaining space and think about what else you want the track to do. Kind of trace it out with your finger. Make sure you will be able to get back to the beginning,. Once you've decided where the track will go, begin placing your paper rises.

For the example one track went over the other. In this situation you want to place the track on the bottom before placing the track on the top, this will minimize difficulty.Once you've done placed all your track you should have a completed roller coaster.

Now that you're done you can customize it even further by using a pen or pencil to draw a entrance line, or put up signs, make overhangs. The possibilities are limitless.

Build A few of these mini-coasters then put them together on a larger poster board to have a theme park!
